This kit comes with everything you need to build an eye-catching clone of the legendary Klon Centaur and KTR, featuring a custom-designed enclosure and high-quality components. This is the kit version of the Refractor project.
If you just want the PCB by itself and are OK with sourcing all your own parts, please see the main project page. Legendary tone for less! As long as the order contains at least one kit, you can add as many PCBs and other products as you want and they will ship together at the same rate. Non-US orders are shipped via standard first-class international service.
All kits use top-mounted input, output and DC jacks so they take up the least amount of pedalboard space even less than a smaller B enclosure with side jacks. You can leave your wire stripper in the toolbox. All kits come with wire assemblies that are already cut to length, so they just need to be soldered to the board and plugged in. This makes wiring simple and foolproof, as well as making it very easy to disassemble the circuit for troubleshooting.
These switches have the longest rated life 50, cycles of any 3PDT footswitch, and they also have much lower actuation force and switch travel than the others.Idrac vs ilo
They also have gold-plated contacts and solder lugs for maximum conductivity and corrosion resistance. I designed these myself and had them custom-manufactured. They serve no functional purpose other than to make your pedal look awesome and stand out.

They use transistors and filtering to emulate the sound of a guitar amp when its volume is cranked up, distorting the signal and adding pleasing musical harmonics. Different pedals use different circuits and different types of transistors to create different flavors of overdrive tone, but at their core, any overdrive effect will usually have these basic controls in them:.
Klon Centaur Replica Complete Kit
Almost all overdrive pedals feature at least one band of EQ or tone to adjust the overall frequency range of the guitar tone. On a classic TubeScreamer pedal, the tone knob is essentially a Treble cut control, designed to lower the harshness of the signal after it has been overdriven. Overdrive and distortion are very similar effects, and in fact, they essentially use the same circuit topology to operate.
The biggest difference in overdrive and distortion in any guitar pedal is the way the pedal clips the signal. Overdrives usually use softer clipping and sometimes only add harmonics without actually clipping the signal, while distortion pedals use much more aggressive hard clipping.

These different types of clipping are achieved using different and varying amounts of transistors in the circuit like mentioned earlier. Almost every electric guitarist uses at least one overdrive pedal on their pedalboard. Guitarists figured out pretty quickly how impractical and unsafe for your hearing that it was to actually crank up the volume of a tube amp until the guitar signal went into overdrive, as well as the fact that when you do that for an extended period of time the amp tends to blow up and stop working.
After the advent of overdrive pedals, guitarists also figured out that they liked the way that these pedals affected the signal in their own way compared to the sound of an overdriven amplifier.
Klon Centaur Clone (Cklone Overdrive)
This is absolutely not a comprehensive list, as mentioned earlier there are hundreds of different styles of overdrive pedals. A super cheap copy of the legendary Ibanez Tube Screamer Pedal. From the color scheme to the name, everything about this pedal screams pun intended the classic TS tone. Check out the latest price on Amazon here. Another classic overdrive pedal, the bright yellow boss SD-1 has a similar tone to a tube screamer, but also can be considered to fall into a category all of its own.
This gives this pedal a huge added layer of versatility. The voice switch is also a nifty tool that cuts some bass out of the signal, which makes it nice for getting a cutting lead tone.
Outlaw effects is a relatively new pedal maker that makes all miniature pedals that also happen to be affordable. The Dumbleweed is a very cool mini pedal that aims to emulate the tone of a Dumble Overdrive Special amplifier, which are known as the most expensive boutique tube amps ever. The Dumbleweed is also packed with a ton of features in a tiny package, with a voice switch that changes the overall tone from bright to dark. The legendary and classic TubeScreamer in a mini enclosure.
Listen to it and get the tone of literally thousands of great guitarists. Does it sound exactly as good as an original TS from the 80s? Probably not.
Seems like a no brainer to me if you are looking for the classic tube screamer tone. The Electro Harmonix Soul Food is their take on one of the most legendary overdrive pedals ever made, the Klon Centaur.
It is designed to give you a transparent overdrive tone, which means it basically is supposed to keep the sound of your initial guitar tone clear in the mix.Your question may be answered by sellers, manufacturers, or customers who purchased this item, who are all part of the Amazon community. One perennially tricky thing about building a Centaur clone is wiring the bypass switch.
Due to its unique buffered bypass arrangement, for most clones you have to solder three resistors to the switch itself and it can be time-consuming. The only change that impacted the tone at all was the addition of R11 labeled R14B in the KTRa 15k resistor, in at around serial number The other changes were R1 R1B in the KTRa 10k series resistor that prevents static on the input, and R28 R1C in the originala k resistor on the output that changes the impedance slightly.
Even R11 is incredibly subtle. They would be just as likely to hear the same difference between two Silvers or two Golds side by side. This is the schematic that my Refractor is based on the component numbers are even the same. The diodes used in the Centaur have been a source of a great deal of technical controversy.
Bill has always claimed that he has a huge stock of a certain type of germanium diode that are long out of production and that can no longer be found anywhere because he bought them all up in the early s.Python flip image
Bill has claimed the diodes are 1N34A, but that they were from a specific manufacturer and that other 1N34As do not sound the same. As a result, the closest we can get is measuring certain characteristics primarily the forward voltage, or voltage dropmeasuring other diodes using the same test conditions, and then trying them in the circuit.Attiny416 example code
The original diodes tested at around 0. Keith from Build Your Own Clone tried a number of different germanium diodes during the development of the Silver Pony and found that the Russian D9E diode was an exact tonal match.
People have tried all sorts of diodes in the circuit, not necessarily aiming for the most authentic results, and have come up with some really good alternates that are worth trying. The BAT41 Schottky diode is one that gets really high marks for having a great sound—it has a different character than germaniums but works well in the circuit. Very few pedals can match the levels of mystery, hype and drama that surround the Klon Centaur Professional Overdrive, but then, very few pedals can match its tone, either.Web ar ios
The visionary behind the Centaur was Bill Finnegan, a guitarist out of Boston, MA who wanted an overdrive that would allow him to coax cranked sounds from his amp at low volumes. He was dissatisfied by the Tube Screamer and other similar options, and decided to create his own with the help of a friend from MIT. Nonetheless, the Centaur made its way onto the pedalboards of a few well-known musicians like Joe Bonamassa and gained traction.
Bill hand-made each of the Centaurs in his apartment for the entire year run of the pedal.Everyone can make guitar pedals.

Lets do a bit of "klonology" chronology, get it?! OK, I'm out In I made three small changes: I added a resistor to give the circuit some protection against a static charge delivered to its input—a change that has no sonic effect.
I also had the circuit board redesigned with a ground plane for better grounding—again, no sonic effect except the potential for a little less hum.
And I added a resistor to give the circuit a very small amount of additional low-mid response—I wanted it to have a little more roundness when used with, say, a Strat into a Super Reverb. I made no other changes. Aion electronics building guidewell helpful and with a lot of informations about the Klon Centaur. Refractor project page by Aion Electronics.

Klon Centaur vs. Klon KTR vs. Feb 12, 1. Messages: But I thought I'd share my thoughts on the subject. After receiving it I tried hard to love it, but just couldn't. I tried using it in various different ways- as a clean boost, tone enhancer, light overdrive and with the drive all the way up.
I couldn't for the life of me find a setting that sounded good. I tried different amps and different guitars, but nothing seemed to remedy the issue. It ended up sitting on a shelf for several years before I even looked at it again- frankly, I don't know why I never sold it before the insane price hikes nobody could of foreseen.
Sometime late last year I decided to give it another go while I was in a transitional rig phase with only one or two other overdrives. I fell in love with it. Tastes change and this thing was sounding just how I wanted an overdrive to sound. My one gripe with the pedal has always been the size.
I just couldn't justify keeping such a large overdrive on my board a PT-Jr. I liked it, but can confidently say it doesn't sound the same as my big box original Klon. I won't even be one of those guys that claims it's " It's a good bit different in my opinion. I find the SF to have a good deal more midrange emphasis and far less bass.
It sounds thin in comparison on the same settings. Regardless of its minor shortcomings, I used it as my main OD for several months happily. Eventually I put my old Klon back on the board and it instantly reaffirmed it was the better pedal to my ears. The size still bothered me, because it booted one of my core pedals off the board to accommodate it and I wasn't going to go up to a bigger board for various reasons.
The search continued. I'd read about the KTR for a couple years on here, but wasn't exactly sure what it was a clone, a reproduction by Bill, a licensed Bill F. After doing more homework on it and finding out it was indeed a circuit designed by Bill to mimic that of the original Klon but built by someone else's handit seemed like my best bet in terms of saving space and retaining that sound.
Fast forward to a week or so back when Musictoyz got a batch; I put down the plastic and had one at my doorstop a few days later. I'll be that guy here and say that the Soul Food sounds I don't have a mortgages-worth invested in my Klon like a lot of guys so I'm not just trying to validate my expense. The KTR cost almost as much as my Klon did years back. The original Klon just sounds better to my ears.
The KTR is the one that's currently on my board due mainly to the added real-estate it offers in comparison to the original as well as the superior to the SF rigidity.
